Background

Gold prices came under pressure on Thursday, extending a multi-day decline after the U.S. Federal Reserve implemented its first interest rate hike in three years and signaled a more aggressive policy path ahead. The central bank's hawkish stance boosted the U.S. dollar, creating significant headwinds for the precious metal.

Fed Delivers Hike, Signals More Tightening

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) on Wednesday unanimously approved a 25 basis point increase to the federal funds rate, a move that was widely anticipated by markets. However, the committee's updated economic projections surprised with a more hawkish tone, according to Investing.com.

The Fed's median forecast for its benchmark policy rate at the end of 2026 was revised upward to 4.1% from a previous projection of 3.8%. During his post-meeting press conference, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh underscored the central bank's focus on inflation, noting that price increases remained above 3% across too many categories of goods and services.

Market Impact and Outlook

The prospect of higher interest rates and a stronger dollar weighed heavily on gold, which is a non-yielding asset. A more valuable dollar also makes bullion more expensive for investors holding other currencies. According to the report, gold has fallen approximately 2% over the past three sessions. Gold Futures were recently trading down 0.9% at $4,348.75 an ounce.

Analysts noted that the outlook for gold remains challenged. Tony Sycamore, a senior market analyst at IG, told Investing.com that expectations for another rate increase this year and further hikes in 2027 had "intensified the headwinds facing gold." From a technical standpoint, Sycamore suggested the current decline could extend toward $4,200, with $4,000 as the next major support level unless the price reclaims its 200-day moving average near $4,539.
