Gold Nears $4,400 as Hormuz Tensions and U.S. CPI Data Shape Fed Outlook

Summary
Gold prices rose as investors weighed the inflationary impact of geopolitical uncertainty in the Strait of Hormuz against a pivotal U.S. inflation report that could guide the Federal Reserve's next interest rate decision.
Gold prices advanced in Wednesday trading, approaching the $4,400 per ounce level as investors monitored geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East and awaited a crucial U.S. inflation report that could influence the Federal Reserve's next policy move.
As of 22:12 ET, spot gold (XAU/USD) was up 0.7% to $4,398.92 an ounce, while gold futures for December delivery traded 0.4% higher at $4,458.62 an ounce, according to Investing.com data.
Geopolitical Risks and Inflation Fears
Uncertainty over a potential U.S.-Iran deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz has contributed to volatility in energy markets. Mixed signals, including reports of diplomatic progress alongside continued attacks on shipping, have created a complex environment for commodity traders.
Higher energy prices can fuel inflation, which could encourage the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates elevated for a longer period. This dynamic increases the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion, creating a headwind for gold prices even amidst geopolitical turmoil.
U.S. Inflation Data in Focus
The market's immediate attention is fixed on Wednesday's U.S. consumer price index (CPI) release, which will provide a key update on the inflation landscape. A softer-than-expected reading could ease pressure on the Fed to tighten policy, while a hotter number could revive expectations for further rate hikes.
AdAccording to the source, swaps markets were pricing in approximately 50-50 odds of a quarter-point rate increase at the Fed's September meeting, indicating significant investor caution ahead of the data.
Central Bank Demand and Technical Outlook
Underpinning gold prices is persistent demand from institutional buyers. The People's Bank of China increased its gold reserves for the 21st consecutive month in July, adding about 640,000 troy ounces to its holdings, which now total 76.08 million ounces.
From a technical perspective, gold faces notable resistance. Tony Sycamore, senior market analyst at IG, told Investing.com that the precious metal must overcome several key levels to continue its recovery, including:
- Downtrend resistance around $4,460
- The 200-day moving average near $4,495
Sycamore suggested that a sustained break above these levels would be necessary to open the path for a stronger rally.
