Background

The UK's FTSE 100 index slipped on Wednesday, as encouraging domestic inflation data failed to outweigh growing concerns over rising energy prices amid the escalating conflict between the U.S. and Iran. As of 07:16 GMT, the blue-chip index was down 0.08%.

Inflation Eases, Boosting Rate Cut Hopes

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) provided a tailwind for UK equities, showing that consumer price inflation (CPI) unexpectedly cooled in June. The annual inflation rate fell to 2.6%, below the consensus forecast of 2.7% and down from 2.8% in May.

The ONS noted that a drop in motor fuel prices was the largest downward contributor. This softer inflation reading strengthens the case for the Bank of England to consider interest rate cuts in the near term, a move that is typically supportive of stock market valuations.

Geopolitical Tensions Fuel Oil Surge

However, market sentiment was soured by a significant jump in oil prices, a direct consequence of heightened geopolitical risk. The U.S. Central Command reported its eleventh consecutive night of strikes against Iran, stoking fears of wider conflict and potential disruptions to global energy supplies.

In response, Brent crude, the international benchmark, climbed 2.54% to $93.32 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 2.50% to $86.44. The risk-off mood also lifted safe-haven assets, with spot gold gaining 0.97%.

Corporate News Highlights Sector Divergence

On the corporate front, several UK-listed companies provided updates that highlighted a mixed economic picture:

  • J D Wetherspoon and property developer Henry Boot both issued profit warnings, citing weaker sales and rising costs, with Henry Boot specifically blaming political uncertainty and the Middle East conflict.
  • In contrast, luxury brand Mulberry reported a 23% rise in first-quarter revenue, while food manufacturer Greencore raised its full-year earnings guidance after a strong third quarter.
