France Opposes EU Approval of Tesla's Full Self-Driving Software Over Safety Concerns

France has formally announced its opposition to approving Tesla Inc.'s (TSLA) Full Self-Driving (FSD) software for use on European Union roads in its current iteration, citing significant safety concerns. The move represents the first public rejection by an EU government of a Dutch-led proposal that would clear the technology for use across the bloc.
Safety Tradeoffs Deemed Insufficient
In a video statement on Wednesday, French Transportation Minister Philippe Tabarot detailed the government's reservations, highlighting risks associated with speeding and potential driver inattention while the system is engaged.
"In France, we believe that, while this system brings a number of technological advances, the safety tradeoffs are not yet sufficient to justify authorisation in its current form," Tabarot said, according to Investing.com. This stance places a significant regulatory hurdle in the path of Tesla's ambitions to expand its advanced driver-assistance features in the European market.

Tesla's FSD is an advanced driver-assistance system that manages steering, acceleration, and braking but still requires the driver to remain fully attentive and prepared to intervene at any moment. The technology's capabilities and safety record are under intense scrutiny by regulators globally.
France's opposition could complicate and potentially delay the EU-wide approval process, creating uncertainty for Tesla's software revenue growth in the region. The news comes amid significant market pressure on the automaker's stock, which was trading down 13.87% according to market data provided in the report.
