Fonterra Trims Upper End of 2026/27 Milk Price Forecast Amid Weaker Global Demand

New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra has trimmed the top end of its farmgate milk price forecast for the 2026/27 season, signaling pressure from softer-than-expected global demand and increased supply from key exporting regions.
Revised Forecast Details
Fonterra announced on Monday it now expects to pay farmers between NZ$8.00 and NZ$10.50 per kilogram of milk solids (kgMS) for the 2026/27 season. This narrows the previous forecast of NZ$8.00 to NZ$11.00 per kgMS.
The company held its forecast for the current 2025/26 season unchanged at a range of NZ$9.60 to NZ$9.80 per kgMS, which has a midpoint of NZ$9.70.
Market Headwinds
The revision follows a significant downturn in international dairy prices. According to Fonterra, Global Dairy Trade prices have fallen 11% across the key products that determine the farmgate milk price since its opening forecast was issued in late May.
AdCompounding the effect of weaker demand, milk production from major exporting nations has been stronger than last year. This combination of rising supply and falling demand is exerting downward pressure on prices, prompting the more conservative outlook from the cooperative.
Outlook and Key Variables
While Fonterra anticipates a strong start to New Zealand's own dairy season, it noted that the El Niño weather pattern remains a significant variable for global supplies. The potential for weather disruptions could introduce volatility to the market later in the season.
For investors and farmers, the revised forecast underscores the sensitivity of dairy revenues to global commodity cycles. The adjustment reflects current market realities, while the unchanged forecast for the 2025/26 season provides a stable baseline as the financial year concludes.
