Federal Reserve Hikes Rates for First Time Since 2023, Triggering Bitcoin Volatility and ETF Outflows

The U.S. Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate for the first time since 2023, causing immediate and significant volatility in the cryptocurrency market. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) increased the federal funds rate to a target range of 3.75% to 4.00% in a widely anticipated move to combat persistent inflation.
Fed Acts on Stubborn Inflation
The FOMC's decision on September 16, 2026, was largely expected by markets, with CME FedWatch data having shown a 93% probability of the hike, according to a report from Investing.com. The move was driven by mounting inflationary pressures, as key economic indicators showed rising costs.
Data from the U.S. Department of Labor revealed that the Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 5.4% year-over-year in August, accelerating from July's 4.8% increase. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) also saw a monthly gain of 0.4%, with rising gasoline prices contributing roughly one-third of the increase. With crude oil prices holding above $100 per barrel, analysts noted the central bank had limited room to pause its tightening cycle.
Bitcoin Swings Amid Regulatory Uncertainty
In the aftermath of the announcement, Bitcoin's price fluctuated sharply. The cryptocurrency traded near $75,200, briefly touching $76,000 before falling to test a key support range between $73,500 and $75,600. A break below this level could open the door to further declines toward $71,000 or even $66,900, according to market analysis cited in the report.
AdAdding to market uncertainty, the U.S. Senate narrowly rejected a bill aimed at clarifying the regulatory jurisdictions of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The legislative setback coincided with a significant institutional pullback, with spot Bitcoin ETFs recording a net outflow of $450.4 million on Tuesday—the largest single-day redemption since June 24.
Sentiment Shifts as Markets Eye Next Move
The combination of macroeconomic tightening and regulatory headwinds has cooled investor sentiment. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index fell to 51, shifting from a state of "Extreme Greed" to a more cautious "Neutral" reading.
Markets are now looking ahead to the next FOMC meeting, scheduled for October 27-28. Major financial institutions, including Barclays, Citigroup, and JPMorgan, reportedly anticipate the Fed could implement an additional 50 basis points of tightening before the end of the year. The policy decision also comes as Fed Chair Kevin Warsh faces political scrutiny, with some administration officials having previously called for rate cuts.
