Fed Rate Hike Probability Jumps to 64%, Pressuring Bitcoin After 24% August Rally

Growing expectations for monetary tightening are creating headwinds for the cryptocurrency market, with the probability of a September interest rate hike by the U.S. Federal Reserve surging to 64%. This macro pressure is weighing on risk assets, causing Bitcoin to consolidate after a strong monthly gain while most major altcoins trade lower.
Macro Pressures Mount
Investor focus has shifted to the Federal Reserve's upcoming Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on September 16. Market-implied odds of a rate hike have climbed significantly from 36% following recent commentary at the Jackson Hole symposium, according to a report citing Woofun AI.
This risk-off sentiment is reflected in traditional markets. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note has climbed to 4.78%. Meanwhile, rising geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have pushed Brent crude oil prices up by 1% to $91 per barrel, further complicating the inflation outlook for central bankers.
Bitcoin Momentum Slows
Despite the challenging macroeconomic backdrop, Bitcoin was trading above $78,400 during Asian market hours on Tuesday. However, volatility has decreased, with CoinDesk data showing a tight 24-hour trading range between $77,200 and $79,200. This follows an impressive 24% gain for Bitcoin in August, its best monthly performance since November 2024.
The recent rally appears to have been driven by spot buying rather than leverage, according to Yusuf Fakhro, a partner at ARP Digital, who noted that open interest has fallen to its lowest level since May. However, fund flows have begun to reverse. After nine consecutive days of net inflows, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a $202 million outflow on Friday, data from Wintermute shows. This shift occurred after Bitcoin was rejected at the $82,000 resistance level.
AdAltcoins Diverge
The broader altcoin market showed signs of weakness, with one notable exception. The HYPE token bucked the downward trend, gaining 4% to trade near $84. Performance among other major digital assets was negative:
- Ethereum (ETH): Fell approximately 1% to around $2,440.
- Solana (SOL): Declined by 1% to trade at $104.
- Tron (TRX) and Dogecoin (DOGE): Dropped by 2%, the largest declines among top assets.
Market Outlook
Analysts describe the current market as being in a "state of tension" with a lack of clear short-term direction, according to Jasper DeMare, an OTC trader at Wintermute. The upcoming August jobs report on Friday is seen as a critical data point that will heavily influence the Fed's decision-making at the September FOMC meeting.
Should the employment data come in stronger than expected, it could further solidify expectations for a rate hike, potentially pushing Treasury yields higher and forcing Bitcoin to retest its recent low of $77,200. The market is now undergoing a significant stress test as it reprices risk assets amid a tightening liquidity environment.
