European Stocks Stabilize as Markets Await Key ECB Rate Decision

European stock markets found a tentative footing on Thursday, recovering slightly from a one-month low as investors paused ahead of a pivotal interest rate decision from the European Central Bank. The pan-European STOXX 600 index edged up 0.1% in early trading after sinking 1.4% in the previous session to its lowest close since late July.
Market Braces for ECB Rate Hike
Investor sentiment has shifted dramatically in recent weeks, with money markets now almost fully pricing in a 25-basis-point interest rate increase by the ECB's Governing Council. A hike of this magnitude would lift the benchmark deposit rate to 2.50%.
This move marks a sharp reversal from just weeks ago, when a pause in the central bank's tightening cycle was the consensus expectation among market participants.
Surging Energy Prices Fuel Inflation Fears
The change in outlook has been driven by a series of macroeconomic shocks that have reignited inflation concerns across the continent. Key factors include:
Ad- Elevated Oil Prices: Brent crude has remained firmly anchored above the $100-a-barrel threshold following geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, stoking fears of cost-push inflation.
- Accelerating CPI: Preliminary Eurostat figures showed Eurozone headline inflation accelerating to 3.3% year-on-year, moving further above the ECB's 2% target.
- Energy Costs: The inflation spike was driven chiefly by a 14.3% surge in the energy component, according to Eurostat.
ECB officials have signaled that the central bank cannot risk allowing these energy-driven price pressures to cause second-round effects, such as higher wage demands.
Focus Turns to Forward Guidance
With a rate hike largely anticipated by the market, investors will focus intently on ECB President Christine Lagarde’s press conference for signals about the future trajectory of monetary policy. Trading desks will scrutinize the ECB's updated staff macroeconomic projections, particularly inflation forecasts, to gauge whether this is a one-off adjustment or the beginning of a more extended hiking cycle.
Beyond the ECB decision, global markets are also looking ahead to Friday's U.S. Consumer Price Index report. That release will serve as the final major data point before the Federal Reserve’s policy decision on September 15–16.
