Background

European stock markets declined in early trading Monday as a sharp escalation in Middle East tensions sent crude oil prices soaring and prompted a broad move away from riskier assets. The flight to safety follows reports of a key maritime chokepoint closure, reversing gains from the previous week.

Strait of Hormuz in Focus

The market downturn was triggered by the breakdown of a fragile truce over the weekend. According to reports, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz "until further notice" following an attack on a commercial vessel and subsequent U.S. military retaliatory strikes.

The U.S. Central Command countered that the vital waterway remains open to lawful transit. However, the threat of a blockade in a channel responsible for transporting a fifth of the world’s seaborne oil was enough to unnerve investors and drive up energy prices.

Energy Stocks Rally Amid Broader Decline

Global oil benchmarks reacted swiftly to the geopolitical uncertainty, with both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate surging more than 4.4%. The spike provided a significant tailwind for Europe's major energy producers, with shares of BP rising 2.7%, TotalEnergies up 2.3%, and Shell gaining 1.8%.

This rally in the energy sector helped London's FTSE 100 post a modest gain of 0.2%. However, broader European markets fell, with the pan-European STOXX 600 index down 0.2%. Germany’s DAX shed 0.3% and France’s CAC 40 dropped 0.2%.

Economic Outlook and Central Bank Watch

Monday's risk-off mood erases some of the hard-fought gains from the previous week, which were driven by a rally in technology stocks. Investors are now turning their attention to upcoming remarks from European Central Bank (ECB) Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel.

As one of the central bank's more hawkish policymakers, her comments will be closely scrutinized for any guidance on the future path of interest rates, especially in light of new potential inflationary pressures from rising energy costs. In individual company news, shares of Akzo Nobel rose 3% after Nippon Paint made an offer for the Dutch firm's decorative paints business.
