European Stocks Decline as STMicroelectronics and Nestle Post Disappointing Updates

European equity markets retreated on Thursday, weighed down by significant losses in the technology and consumer staples sectors after disappointing corporate updates from chipmaker STMicroelectronics and food giant Nestle.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index was down 0.5% to 643.56 by mid-morning, according to Reuters data, as investors digested a mixed batch of corporate earnings ahead of the European Central Bank's policy announcement.
Disappointing Earnings Hit Key Sectors
The technology sector slipped 0.8%, driven by a sharp sell-off in semiconductor stocks. Shares of STMicroelectronics plummeted 13% after the company issued a third-quarter revenue forecast with a midpoint that fell short of analyst expectations. The negative sentiment also impacted peer BE Semiconductor, which dropped 2% following its own results.
Consumer staples also faced heavy pressure, with the food and beverages index leading sectoral losses. Nestle shares tumbled nearly 7%, putting the stock on track for its worst single-day performance since July 2002. The decline occurred despite the company raising its full-year organic sales outlook.
Energy Sector Gains Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Gains in the energy sector provided a partial offset to the broader market weakness. The sector index rose 1.6% as Brent crude prices climbed above $96 a barrel. According to reports, the price surge followed fresh U.S. strikes in the Middle East and Houthi attacks on oil tankers, escalating a conflict that has rattled global markets.
AdReflecting the strength in oil prices, French energy major TotalEnergies saw its shares gain 2.7% after reporting its strongest quarterly earnings in almost three years, citing higher oil prices and strong refining margins.
Other Notable Movers
- Soitec: The French semiconductor materials manufacturer was a standout performer, with its shares surging nearly 24% after reporting first-quarter revenue that beat market expectations.
- easyJet: The budget airline's stock climbed 5%, even as it reported a 70% drop in third-quarter profit.
- Stora Enso: The Finnish forestry group's shares fell about 11% after its quarterly operating profit missed forecasts.
Market Context
The market moves come as investors await the European Central Bank's latest monetary policy decision, which is expected later in the day. While the ECB is widely anticipated to hold interest rates steady, market participants will be closely analyzing its statement for any signals regarding the future path of rate adjustments.
