European Diesel Margins Hit Record High Amid Supply Disruptions

Summary

The profitability of refining crude oil into diesel in Europe surged to a new peak on Tuesday, driven by persistent supply disruptions from Russia and the Middle East, tightening the global market.

Background

The premium for European diesel over crude oil reached a new record high on Tuesday, signaling intense tightness in the market as supply disruptions continue to pressure global inventories.

Market Snapshot

The margin for low-sulphur gasoil futures, a key benchmark for European diesel, climbed to a record $76.42 per barrel over Brent crude during the trading session. According to market data at 1627 GMT, the margin settled slightly lower at $76.08 per barrel, still an increase of $2.69 from the previous close. This so-called "crack spread" is a direct measure of refining profitability and a crucial indicator of supply-demand balance.

Supply Squeeze Intensifies

The surge in diesel prices is primarily attributed to persistent supply issues. Ongoing disruptions to exports from the Middle East and constrained Russian refinery operations have significantly tightened the market. This supply squeeze is compounded by heightened seasonal demand, particularly from the agricultural sector, further straining available stocks.

A Global Phenomenon

The tightness in the diesel market is not confined to Europe. In the United States, the diesel crack spread also hit a record high of $102.20 per barrel on Monday, underscoring the global nature of the supply crunch.

Meanwhile, trade data from China presents a mixed picture. According to customs data released Tuesday, Chinese diesel exports provided some relief to the market, climbing 88% month-on-month in July to 810,000 metric tons. However, the country's total refined oil product exports for July were still down 12.9% compared to the same period last year, indicating that broader export flows remain constrained.
