Background

Shares of Enphase Energy (NASDAQ: ENPH) plummeted more than 20% in premarket trading on Wednesday after the solar technology company announced disappointing third-quarter financial results and issued a weak outlook for the current quarter. The premarket price indicated a drop to $23.74, which would put the stock below its 52-week low of $25.78, according to Investing.com data from October 28, 2026.

Disappointing Results and Outlook

The steep sell-off was triggered by the company's failure to meet analyst expectations for both profit and revenue, coupled with guidance that pointed to a significant sequential decline in business.

  • Q3 Earnings Per Share (EPS): The company reported $0.41, missing the consensus estimate of $0.51.
  • Q3 Revenue: Revenue came in at $293.3 million, below the expected $303.85 million.
  • Q4 Revenue Guidance: Enphase projects fourth-quarter revenue to be between $225 million and $255 million, substantially lower than the analyst consensus of approximately $300.5 million.

Company management noted that part of the third-quarter revenue shortfall was a deliberate effort to under-ship products to help clear excess channel inventory held by its distributors.

Analysts Cut Price Targets

Following the report, several Wall Street analysts revised their outlooks on the stock. Morgan Stanley cut its price target to $16 from $24, while Oppenheimer downgraded the stock to "Perform." Mizuho and JPMorgan also reduced their price targets to $34 and $29, respectively.

Mizuho cited weaker residential demand in both the U.S. and Europe as a key factor in its decision. The wide range of new analyst price targets, spanning from $16 to $34, highlights the significant uncertainty surrounding the company's valuation and near-term prospects.

Sector-Wide Concerns

The negative sentiment extended to peers in the solar energy sector, with shares of competitor SolarEdge falling 7.1% in premarket trading in sympathy with Enphase's results. This suggests investors are concerned about broader demand weakness across the residential solar market.

Despite the near-term challenges, Enphase management guided for 2027 revenue to reach approximately $1 billion. Susquehanna analysts noted that growth in 2027 could be driven by batteries and small commercial projects, though the company's core residential market is expected to remain flat.
