Background

Major U.S. energy stocks advanced in premarket trading on Tuesday, tracking a sharp rise in crude oil prices driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The move came after Iran warned that oil and gas infrastructure in the Persian Gulf could be targeted, stoking fears of significant supply disruptions.

Oil Prices Spike on Supply Concerns

Crude oil benchmarks saw significant gains as markets priced in a higher geopolitical risk premium. By 4:53 AM ET, Brent crude futures for November delivery had risen 2.3% to $99.19 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures climbed 3.3% to $94.49 a barrel.

The price surge followed reports of retaliatory strikes between the U.S. and Iran over the weekend. Iran subsequently threatened to respond to what it called U.S. "economic warfare" by potentially establishing a maritime exclusion zone in the Persian Gulf, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments.

Energy Equities Follow Crude Higher

The rally in oil prices provided a direct lift to shares of oil and gas producers, whose profitability is closely tied to energy commodity prices. The premarket session saw broad gains across the sector:

  • Exxon Mobil (XOM) rose 1.8%
  • Chevron (CVX) gained 1.5%
  • ConocoPhillips (COP) added 1.6%
  • Valero Energy (VLO) climbed 1.9%
  • Diamondback Energy (FANG) and Marathon Petroleum (MPC) each rose 1.1%

Focus Remains on Strait of Hormuz

Market participants are closely monitoring developments around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply travels. Iran's reported plans to introduce a restricted zone have raised concerns about potential slowdowns in tanker traffic.

However, the situation remains fluid. In a potentially de-escalatory signal, Iran also indicated that it was close to an agreement with Oman regarding arrangements for the strait, which could offer a mechanism to ease shipping disruptions, according to the source report.
