Background

An index tracking emerging market currencies climbed to a new record high on Friday, poised for its eighth consecutive weekly gain as the U.S. dollar continued to face broad-based selling pressure. The MSCI Emerging Markets Currency Index rose 0.3%, extending a rally fueled by persistent weakness in the greenback, which has provided strong support for risk-sensitive assets.

Dollar Weakness Persists Amid Yield Concerns

The dollar's decline comes amid a renewed climb in U.S. Treasury yields, which continued to rise despite a temporary intervention by the Treasury Department on Wednesday. According to a report from Investing.com, yields pushed higher even after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested the government could expand its bond buyback program and mentioned the possibility of fiscal consolidation.

Persistent investor concerns over the expanding U.S. debt and broader policy uncertainty have weighed on the dollar throughout the week, diminishing its purchasing power and safe-haven appeal.

Broad Gains Across Emerging Markets

The soft dollar provided a significant tailwind for emerging market assets. The MSCI Emerging Markets Stock Index gained 1.3%, on track for its second straight weekly advance. Several currencies posted notable gains against the dollar:

  • The Chinese yuan hovered near a 3.5-year peak.
  • The Turkish lira surged 2.1% after a key manufacturing business confidence index for August rose to 102.8, a reading above 100 that indicates optimism.

Regional Economic Drivers

In China, Vice Minister of Finance Liao Min stated that the country would roll out additional fiscal measures to address its slowing economy. Chinese stocks were mixed, with the blue-chip CSI 300 index up 0.6% while the Shanghai Composite was mostly flat.

In Emerging Europe, the Czech koruna appreciated 0.4% against the euro, even after the country's finance ministry lowered its economic growth forecast on Thursday. The Polish zloty added 0.2% following a Thursday report from the state news agency PAP that the government proposed raising the corporate tax rate to 30% for large utility and fuel firms in 2027.
