Eli Lilly Stock Climbs on Analyst Upgrade, Strong Obesity Drug Data

Eli Lilly (LLY) shares rose in pre-market trading, bucking a broader market decline, after a bullish analyst upgrade and new data highlighted the pharmaceutical giant's strengthening grip on the weight-loss drug market.
Berenberg Upgrade Boosts Outlook
Berenberg upgraded Eli Lilly's stock to Buy from Hold, raising its price target to $1,400 from a previous $1,220. The firm cited the company's established leadership with its injectable treatments Zepbound and Mounjaro as a key factor.
Analysts at Berenberg also pointed to the anticipated diabetes approval for Lilly's oral GLP-1 drug, Foundayo, as a significant future catalyst for demand. The new price target suggests approximately 25% upside potential from the stock's prior levels.
Strong Commercial Momentum
AdRecent data reinforces the positive outlook. At the Morgan Stanley Global Healthcare Conference on Monday, Eli Lilly disclosed several key metrics underscoring its commercial success:
- Its oral obesity drug, Foundayo, has captured more than 30% of new patients in the U.S. since its April 2026 launch, rapidly gaining on Novo Nordisk's competing tablet.
- The company's Medicare Bridge program, which offers its weight-loss drugs for a $50 monthly copay, has enrolled approximately 600,000 patients.
- Citing IQVIA data, Lilly now controls an estimated 60.9% of the U.S. obesity drug market, compared to 38.8% for its primary competitor, Novo Nordisk.
Market Context
Lilly's advance came even as the wider market showed signs of weakness. In pre-market activity, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average were both trading modestly lower as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy meeting. The combination of the analyst upgrade and strong performance data allowed Lilly to trade higher against the cautious market backdrop.
