Dubai Crude Premium Rises on Increased Trading as Regional Benchmarks Diverge

Summary
The spot premium for Dubai crude oil rose on Friday amid a pickup in trading activity, even as premiums for other regional benchmarks like Oman and Murban declined.
The spot premium for Middle East benchmark Dubai crude increased on Friday, supported by a surge in trading activity. The gains stood in contrast to other regional grades, as premiums for both Oman and Murban crude fell during the session.
Market Activity
Commodity trading house Trafigura was identified as the primary bidder during Friday's session, extending its active buying from the two previous trading days, according to market data.
Despite the daily gain, both the Oman and Dubai benchmarks recorded overall declines for the month of July. The monthly weakness was partly attributed to improved supply expectations earlier in the month, driven by increased oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
Supply and Transit Concerns
AdRecent tensions in the Persian Gulf have renewed concerns among market participants regarding the security of oil shipments from the vital producing region. These geopolitical factors can influence risk premiums for crude passing through key chokepoints.
According to Kpler ship-tracking data, overall traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained limited on Friday. However, two very large crude carriers (VLCCs) successfully transited the waterway:
- The Spain B, which loaded crude from Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura port on July 12.
- The Noble, which loaded Iraqi Basrah crude on July 25 and is headed for China.
Each VLCC is transporting approximately 2 million barrels of crude oil, highlighting the strategic importance of the strait for global energy supplies.
