Dr. Reddy's Labs to Distribute Takeda's Dengue Vaccine in India

Summary
Dr. Reddy's Laboratories has signed an agreement with Takeda Pharmaceutical to promote and distribute Qdenga, the first dengue vaccine approved for use in India, with an expected launch in the first half of 2027.
Dr. Reddy's Laboratories announced on Friday that it has partnered with Japanese drugmaker Takeda Pharmaceutical to distribute the Qdenga dengue vaccine in India. The agreement positions Dr. Reddy's to commercialize the first dengue vaccine approved for both children and adults in the country, targeting a significant public health concern.
Agreement and Market Entry
Under the terms of the agreement, Dr. Reddy's will handle the promotion and distribution of Qdenga across India. This follows the vaccine's approval by India’s drug regulator several months ago. The company stated that the vaccine is expected to become available in the Indian market in the first half of 2027.
The partnership provides Dr. Reddy's with a first-mover advantage in a new vaccine category in one of the world's most affected regions. For Takeda, it secures a distribution channel with a major, established Indian pharmaceutical firm.
Public Health Context
AdDengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection and is one of the world's fastest-spreading vector-borne diseases. The collaboration aims to address a pressing medical need in India, which sees a high incidence of the disease.
According to the World Health Organization, the global burden of dengue is substantial. The WHO reported a record 14.4 million dengue cases and 11,201 deaths globally in 2024. In India alone, the figures for 2024 included 232,425 cases and 233 deaths.
About the Qdenga Vaccine
Qdenga is administered in two 0.5 ml doses, with a three-month interval between them. A key feature of the vaccine is that it can be administered to individuals regardless of their prior dengue infection history, which eliminates the need for pre-vaccination screening. This simplifies the logistical and cost considerations for large-scale immunization programs.
