Dollar Steadies After Sharp Drop as Traders Await Federal Reserve Policy Cues

The U.S. dollar was little changed on Monday, stabilizing after posting its worst session since the end of April last week. Investors are now closely monitoring upcoming signals from the Federal Reserve for fresh direction on monetary policy.
At 4:02 PM ET (20:02 GMT), the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was trading near the flatline at 100.85.
Fed Policy in Focus
The dollar's pause follows a 0.5% slide on Thursday, triggered by a softer-than-expected June nonfarm payrolls report. Currency markets interpreted the data as a sign that the labor market, while resilient, was not overheating, potentially giving the Federal Reserve leeway to keep interest rates on hold.
Market participants are now looking ahead to the release of the minutes from the Fed's June meeting on Wednesday. The document will be scrutinized for insights into policymakers' thinking, particularly after recent commentary from the central bank suggested a shift away from forward guidance toward a focus on incoming inflation data.
AdYen Weakness and Eurozone Data
Elsewhere, the Japanese yen continued to show weakness, with the USD/JPY pair rising 0.4% to 162.04. The yen has been languishing near a 40-year low and remains deep in territory that has previously prompted intervention from Japanese authorities. Officials have issued verbal warnings in recent weeks, keeping traders on alert for direct market action.
"While softer US data improves near-term conditions for the yen, we believe more hawkish rate communication from the Bank of Japan is still needed to prevent a repeat of the rebound in USD/JPY seen after the April/May intervention round," analysts at ING said in a note.
The euro was slightly higher against the dollar at $1.1441, following the release of mixed economic data. According to Eurostat, industrial producer prices in the Eurozone rose 5.9% year-over-year in May, driven by energy costs, while retail sales ticked up 0.2% for the month.
