Dollar Edges Higher as Currency Markets Await Central Bank Decisions

The U.S. dollar ticked higher on Wednesday in quiet currency markets, with most major pairs seeing minimal movement as traders awaited a wave of central bank policy decisions scheduled for the following week. A light economic calendar in the U.S. and a pre-meeting blackout period for the Federal Reserve provided few immediate catalysts for market participants.
Cautious Trading Dominates
The U.S. dollar index (DXY), which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, climbed 0.1% to 101.78. The muted activity reflects a broader holding pattern in the foreign exchange market ahead of monetary policy announcements from the Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan (BOJ), and other key institutions between October 28 and 30.
Money markets widely anticipate the Fed will hold its policy rate steady in the 3.75%–4.00% range, according to Investing.com. However, investors will closely scrutinize any forward guidance for clues about potential adjustments in December. Analysts at JPMorgan noted a "broad-based hawkish shift from policy-makers" globally, driven by resilient demand and renewed inflationary pressures.
Euro Remains Fragile Amid French Unrest
The euro edged up 0.1% to $1.1234, but the currency's footing remains uncertain amid ongoing civil unrest in France. The French government's plan to deploy military personnel for upcoming protests has amplified concerns about the nation's political and fiscal stability.
AdThis instability has pressured French government debt, pushing 10-year borrowing costs toward 24-year highs and widening sovereign credit default swap (CDS) spreads against benchmark German Bunds. According to Robin Brooks, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, the sell-off is exacerbated by a "positioning unwind" as foreign investors who bought French debt over the summer now reduce their holdings.
Yen Firms on Intervention Watch
In Asia, the Japanese yen firmed slightly to 158.10 per dollar. Traders remain highly cautious of potential currency intervention by Japanese authorities, as the exchange rate hovers near levels that have previously triggered official warnings.
Elsewhere, the British pound inched up by 0.1% to $1.3396, holding onto gains from a 0.6% surge the previous day. That rally was fueled by mixed labor market data that strengthened the case for further interest rate hikes from the Bank of England. The BOJ is expected to hold its key rate at 1.25% next week, with the market's focus on Governor Kazuo Ueda’s press conference for signals on future policy.
