Copper Price Stalls at Key Resistance as Bearish Technical Pattern Looms

Background

Copper prices are consolidating within a tight corridor as traders weigh conflicting technical signals, with the industrial metal testing a significant resistance level while a bearish chart pattern remains in effect. According to technical analysis from Investing.com based on the 5-hour chart, the price is caught between a support floor at $6.37 and a resistance ceiling at $6.58.

A decisive break outside of this range is expected to dictate the commodity's next major directional move. As of the latest update, copper was trading around $6.50.

Bearish Signals Predominate

The prevailing technical setup points toward potential downside risk. A "bear flag" pattern, which often signals the continuation of a downtrend, is reportedly active and developing on the charts. This bearish outlook is reinforced by several factors:

  • The price remains below the 50-period Simple Moving Average (SMA), currently near $6.60.
  • A cluster of resistance indicators, including a SuperTrend line and a Fibonacci retracement level, is concentrated in the $6.57–$6.61 zone, creating a formidable barrier for buyers.

Pockets of Bullish Resistance

Despite the bearish outlook, some short-term indicators suggest buyers are still active. A bullish crossover in the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator and the price reclaiming the Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) around $6.50 hint at underlying upward momentum.

Furthermore, a "bullish engulfing" candle pattern observed near $6.43 on October 22 indicates that a sharp buying response occurred at that level, posing a risk of a quick reversal for overly aggressive sellers. Analysts note the range between $6.45 and $6.55 is a zone of indecision, prone to volatile price swings until a clearer trend emerges.
