Background

Panoro Energy (OAX: PENR) shares plunged after a jack-up drilling rig sank at an offshore license in Gabon where the company is a partner, leading to a production halt and one confirmed fatality. The stock fell by as much as 6.5% to NOK 31.7 as investors reacted to the operational setback and its implications for the company's near-term growth.

Rig Incident Halts Production

The incident occurred late Saturday at the Dussafu Marin Permit, where Panoro holds a 17.5% non-operated interest. The rig, named Prospector 5 and operated by Borr Drilling, suffered a "punch through" and lost stability while preparing for a drilling campaign, causing it to sink.

Panoro confirmed the event in a statement, noting that production at the associated MaBoMo facility was shut down as a standard precaution. According to reports, of the 115 personnel on board, one worker was confirmed dead, four were missing, and 110 were safely accounted for. The operator of the block, BW Energy (OAX: BWE), holds a 73.5% working interest.

Impact on Growth Strategy

The sell-off reflects investor concern over the disruption to Panoro's strategic plans. The Dussafu block is central to the company's near-term production growth, with a multi-well infill drilling campaign planned to boost output into 2027. The loss of the rig creates significant uncertainty around the timeline for this crucial program.

Investors moved quickly to reprice the stock based on several negative factors:

  • The tragic loss of life and ongoing search-and-rescue operations.
  • An immediate halt to production from the MaBoMo facility.
  • The total loss of the drilling rig, delaying future work.
  • Uncertainty surrounding the timeline and cost of resuming the infill drilling campaign.

Market Reaction

The share price decline was a direct, company-specific reaction to the operational shock. The license operator, BW Energy, also saw its shares fall sharply, while rig owner Borr Drilling tumbled in premarket trading. The broader market was reportedly stable, underscoring that the sell-off was not driven by sector-wide or macroeconomic headwinds.
