Dollar Eases Ahead of Federal Reserve Decision; Chinese Yuan Reaches 4-Year High

The U.S. dollar edged lower in Monday's Asian trading session as currency markets turned their focus to a packed week of central bank meetings, headlined by the U.S. Federal Reserve. Meanwhile, China's yuan strengthened to a fresh four-year high, supported by persistent central bank action.
Fed Decision Looms Large
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, fell 0.11% in Asian trade, extending its retreat from an 18-month high set earlier in October. The main driver for markets this week is the Fed's two-day policy meeting, which kicks off on Tuesday.
Policymakers are widely expected to leave the federal funds rate unchanged at 4.0% on Wednesday. The decision comes after the central bank raised rates by 25 basis points in September to address stubbornly high inflation. With a rate hold anticipated, investors will focus intently on the accompanying policy statement and remarks from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh for any hawkish signals regarding future monetary policy.
Divergent Moves in Asian Currencies
In China, the onshore yuan reached its strongest point since June 2022, driven by a series of strong daily midpoint fixes from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC). According to the source material, the move is seen as a way to both ease trade tensions and provide the central bank with more flexibility to potentially loosen policy to support economic growth.
AdThe Japanese yen traded in a tight range against the dollar as traders remained on the sidelines ahead of a Bank of Japan (BOJ) meeting later in the week. While the BOJ is expected to hold its interest rate at 1.25%, markets are preparing for a potentially hawkish outlook from the central bank in response to persistent domestic inflation.
Broader Market Backdrop
Other major currencies saw muted activity. The euro ticked up 0.1% against the dollar, with the European Central Bank also scheduled to meet this week, while the British pound was flat.
Currency markets also took some direction from commodity prices, where a 2% drop in oil reportedly provided some relief from broader inflationary pressures, according to Investing.com.
