Background

Asian currencies and the U.S. dollar were largely range-bound in Tuesday trading as market participants awaited key U.S. inflation data for fresh guidance on the Federal Reserve's monetary policy path. The U.S. Dollar Index, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, traded flat at 99.81.

RBA Holds Rates Steady

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) kept its official cash rate unchanged at 4.35%, a decision that was widely anticipated by markets. The central bank is extending its pause to assess the impact of previous rate hikes on an economy showing signs of slowing, while inflation remains above its target.

In its accompanying statement, the RBA noted that inflation, while easing, remains persistent. The board reiterated its commitment to bringing inflation back to its 2%-3% target range, stating it "will continue to do what it considers necessary... including increasing the cash rate target further if upside risks materialise." The Australian dollar (AUD/USD) was largely unmoved following the announcement.

Markets Await U.S. Inflation Cues

The primary focus for global currency markets is the upcoming U.S. consumer price index (CPI) report. The data is seen as a critical input for the Federal Reserve's outlook on interest rates, particularly after a recent labor report showed U.S. payrolls unexpectedly fell by 23,000 in July, against expectations of an 80,000 increase.

While the soft jobs data has tempered some expectations for aggressive Fed tightening, investors remain positioned for at least one more rate hike this year. The upcoming CPI, producer price, and retail sales figures will be closely scrutinized for evidence of cooling inflation that could alter the Fed's policy trajectory.

Yen Eases as Other Currencies Tread Water

The Japanese yen gave back some of its recent gains, with the USD/JPY pair steadying around 159.23. The yen had previously rallied sharply from a 40-year low amid speculation of official intervention, leaving traders cautious of further action from authorities. Trading was thinner than usual as Japanese markets were closed for a holiday.

Elsewhere in Asia, currency movements were minimal, reflecting the broader cautious sentiment. The South Korean won saw a slight gain, while the Singapore dollar and Chinese yuan traded flat against the U.S. dollar.
