Background

The U.S. dollar steadied on Tuesday after a week of declines, with major currency pairs trading in tight ranges as investors awaited a series of key economic reports that could influence the Federal Reserve's monetary policy outlook.

Meanwhile, the Japanese yen retreated from its recent highs even as U.S. officials reiterated their commitment to coordinated intervention should market volatility become excessive.

Major Currencies Await Catalyst

The U.S. Dollar Index edged up 0.1% on Tuesday, recovering a small portion of its recent losses. The euro was largely unchanged, trading near $1.1510 as investors balanced concerns over high inflation in the eurozone against the prospect of further interest rate hikes by the European Central Bank this fall.

Broader G-10 currency trading remained subdued. According to a note from Brown Brothers Harriman, while a resilient U.S. economy should be supportive for the dollar, this has been offset by a perception that the Federal Reserve has not fully matched its hawkish inflation rhetoric with policy action. Market sentiment was also dampened by geopolitical uncertainty, which tempered risk appetite.

The Japanese yen pulled back, with the USD/JPY pair rising as the yen weakened by nearly 0.4% to trade around 157.7 per dollar. The move erased a portion of the nearly 5% gain the currency had posted over the previous three trading sessions following suspected intervention by Japanese authorities.

Underscoring the continued focus on the currency, U.S. Treasury officials reaffirmed that Washington remains prepared to participate in further coordinated actions to counter any future disorderly movements in the yen. This statement signals continued joint vigilance between the U.S. and Japan on currency stability.

Focus Shifts to U.S. Labor Market

Market participants are now squarely focused on a heavy calendar of U.S. labor market data. The week's releases include the JOLTS job openings report, trade balance, and factory orders, all culminating in the crucial non-farm payrolls report on Friday.

Investors will be scrutinizing these figures for any signs of a cooling labor market, which could provide the Federal Reserve with room to ease its restrictive monetary policy stance. Elsewhere in Asia, the Indian rupee was flat as markets awaited the Reserve Bank of India's interest rate decision on Wednesday, where it is widely expected to hold its benchmark rate at 5.25%, according to a Reuters poll.
