Crypto Markets Surge as Trump, Tech CEOs Push for Digital Asset Legislation

The cryptocurrency market experienced a broad and significant rally, with Bitcoin surging past $71,700 and Ethereum reaching a 15-month high. The primary catalyst, according to a report from Investing.com, was a high-profile meeting between former President Donald Trump and technology executives to push for new digital asset legislation, which ignited strong risk-on sentiment and triggered the largest volume of short liquidations since 2021.
Political Tailwinds Drive Market
The rally gained momentum following a Wednesday meeting where President Trump, alongside Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, advocated for Congress to pass the 'Clarity Act.' This move toward regulatory clarity, combined with a U.S. Treasury plan to buy back $4 billion in long-term debt, created favorable conditions for assets perceived as higher risk, including cryptocurrencies.
This confluence of events spurred a significant short squeeze, where traders who had bet against the market were forced to buy back assets to cover their positions, further accelerating the price increases. Bitcoin's 24-hour trading volume reached $59.6 billion, indicating substantial institutional and retail participation.
Ethereum Outpaces Bitcoin
While the entire market saw gains, Ethereum was the standout performer. According to data from Investing.com, as of early Thursday morning:
Ad- Ethereum (ETH) jumped +18.57% to $2,278, its highest level in 15 months.
- Bitcoin (BTC) rose +11.28% to $71,722, breaking through a key psychological resistance level.
- Solana (SOL) rallied +13.54% to $87.89.
- XRP increased by +14.35% to $1.151.
Ethereum's outperformance relative to Bitcoin often signals a market rotation into alternative cryptocurrencies, or 'altcoins,' which is typically viewed as a sign of broadening bullish sentiment. As a publicly traded proxy for the sector, shares in Coinbase Global (COIN) also rose +9.55%.
Technical Indicators Flash Caution
Despite the strong upward momentum, technical indicators suggest the rally may be overheated in the short term. The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI), a measure of momentum, shows several assets in 'overbought' territory, including Ethereum at 82.8 and Bitcoin at 77.9. An RSI reading above 70 often indicates that an asset may be due for a price correction.
Furthermore, a divergence exists between short-term and long-term signals for some assets. While showing strong daily gains, cryptocurrencies like XRP, Cardano, and Dogecoin retain 'Strong Sell' ratings on their weekly charts, according to Investing.com. This raises the risk that the current surge could be a 'dead cat bounce' rather than a sustained trend. The key political risk for the market remains the potential for the Clarity Act to stall in Congress.
