Colombian Peso Hits One-Month High on Hawkish Central Bank Outlook

The Colombian peso surged to its strongest level in more than a month on Monday, buoyed by comments from a central bank official indicating a hawkish stance on monetary policy. The currency's appreciation highlights growing investor confidence in its yield potential, even as the U.S. Federal Reserve continues its own rate-hiking cycle.
Hawkish Commentary Drives Gains
The peso strengthened 0.54% to 3150.25 per dollar, a level not seen since September 17. The rally followed remarks made on Friday by Laura Moisa, a member of Colombia’s seven-person central bank board.
Moisa stated that current inflation is primarily the result of supply-side shocks and that interest rates will likely need to remain high for a longer duration to manage price pressures. This outlook suggests a more attractive interest rate differential for investors holding the peso.
Investor Appeal in a Tightening Environment
The peso's recent performance has made it one of Latin America's top-performing currencies this month. It is attracting yield-seeking investors looking for alternatives to the U.S. dollar, according to market analysis.
AdThis trend comes despite a strengthening U.S. dollar, which is typically bolstered by rate increases from the Federal Reserve. The Fed raised its benchmark rate last month for the first time since 2023, and investors are reportedly anticipating at least two more increases by March 2027.
Broader LatAm Currency Strength
The positive sentiment extended to other currencies in the region on Monday. Key market movements included:
- MSCI’s index for Latin American currencies rose 0.45%.
- The Mexican peso gained 0.26%.
- The Chilean peso advanced 0.38%.
