Coinbase Overhauls Trading Fees for Active Users on Advanced Platform

Summary
The cryptocurrency exchange has lowered volume thresholds and reduced spot trading rates for users on its Coinbase Advanced platform, aiming to attract more active traders globally.
Coinbase (COIN) announced a revised fee structure for its Coinbase Advanced platform, implementing significant reductions in trading rates and lowering volume requirements for its most active users. The changes, which took effect September 16, are part of a broader effort to enhance the platform's competitiveness and attract sophisticated traders.
New Fee Structure Details
Under the new model, Coinbase has consolidated volume tiers to include both spot and derivatives activity, allowing traders to qualify for lower fees more easily. The company also lowered the entry threshold for its advanced tiers to a trading volume of $10,000, down from the previous $25,000.
Key changes to entry-level spot trading fees include:
- United States: 0.50% maker fee and 0.90% taker fee.
- EU & UK: 0.25% maker fee and 0.50% taker fee.
- Brazil, India & other international markets: 0.09% maker fee and 0.10% taker fee.
AdFor top-tier traders, fees for spot crypto trading can be as low as 0 basis points for makers and 2 basis points for takers at the highest VIP8 level. In eligible international markets, Coinbase is also introducing maker rebates of up to 0.4 basis points for perpetuals contracts at higher VIP tiers.
Strategic Rationale and Market Impact
The fee adjustments are a clear strategic move to capture more market share from high-frequency and institutional traders, who are highly sensitive to transaction costs. By lowering the barrier to entry for its preferential fee tiers and offering rebates, Coinbase is positioning itself more aggressively against rival exchanges known for low-cost structures.
"Advanced clients need deep liquidity, reliable execution and broad market access," said Shannon Kurtas, Senior Director of Product Management at Coinbase, in a statement. "These changes are another investment in enhancing the Coinbase Advanced experience for our active traders." The company also noted that traders can qualify for VIP fees instantly by holding USDC on the platform, and that U.S. stock trading remains commission-free.
