China Proposes AI and Trade Initiatives to Bolster BRICS Economic Bloc

Summary
Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced new initiatives focused on artificial intelligence and trade to strengthen economic ties within the expanded 'Greater BRICS' group, aiming to increase the bloc's influence on the global stage.
Chinese President Xi Jinping introduced a series of proposals aimed at deepening economic and technological cooperation among the expanded BRICS nations, signaling Beijing's intent to elevate the bloc's role in global development. The initiatives were unveiled on Sunday during the group's annual leaders' summit in New Delhi, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
China's New Proposals
President Xi emphasized that the success of the "Greater BRICS Initiative" hinges on establishing a foundation of pragmatic cooperation. He called on member nations to stabilize industrial and supply chains while working toward an integrated market.
Key proposals from China include:
- BRICS AI Open Source Zone: An initiative to foster collaboration on large language models, AI training, and the development of an open AI ecosystem.
- BRICS Special Economic Zone Partnership: A framework designed to deepen economic integration among members.
- BRICS Service Trade Forum: An event to be hosted by China next year to promote trade and investment opportunities within the bloc.
A 'Greater BRICS' Vision
AdThe BRICS group has significantly expanded beyond its original members—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It now includes Iran, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, with an additional 10 partner countries, broadening its representation across the Global South.
Russian President Vladimir Putin described the bloc as a "powerful driving force" for creating a fairer, multipolar world order. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi added that solutions developed within BRICS should be made accessible to meet the needs of the entire Global South.
Geopolitical Backdrop
The summit also registered a notable diplomatic achievement. Despite rising tensions in the Middle East, the leaders forged a consensus on a joint declaration, backed by both Iran and the UAE, which expressed deep concern over the conflict and urged "maximum restraint." A high-level meeting between the Iranian President and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi also took place on the summit's sidelines, focusing on de-escalation and regional stability.
