China Halts Helium Exports, Citing Middle East Tensions and Domestic Supply Needs

China suspended all helium exports with immediate effect on Friday, a move aimed at securing domestic supplies as rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East threaten to disrupt the global market for the critical industrial gas.
The policy is a direct response to escalating conflict involving Iran, which has renewed concerns over the stability of global helium shipments, according to a report from Investing.com.
Implications for the Semiconductor Industry
Helium is an irreplaceable component in the production of semiconductors, a sector highly sensitive to supply chain disruptions. The gas, which cannot be synthetically produced on an industrial scale, is crucial for several fabrication processes:
- Cooling advanced manufacturing equipment
- Plasma etching and chemical vapor deposition
- Supporting lithography and leak detection
While the export halt is designed to protect China's domestic chip industry, it could add further pressure to the global market, potentially affecting manufacturers in neighboring Asian countries that import surplus volumes from China.
AdChina's Strategic Vulnerability
The move underscores China's significant dependence on foreign helium. Imported gas accounts for approximately 85% of the country's total consumption, making its high-tech industries vulnerable to external shocks.
Qatar, one of the world's largest helium exporters, has supplied more than half of China's imports in recent years. Previous attacks in the region have disrupted shipments from the Gulf producer, highlighting the fragility of the supply chain that Beijing now seeks to mitigate.
Context of Export Controls
This suspension is consistent with Beijing's broader strategy of controlling exports of strategic materials to prioritize domestic needs during periods of market stress. In the past, China has imposed similar curbs on shipments of products including fuel, fertilizers, and sulphuric acid to ensure domestic availability and manage prices.
