CATL Stock Nears 52-Week Low After 24% Monthly Decline

Summary
Shares of battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. have plunged over 24% in the past month, trading near a 52-week low and prompting a debate among investors about whether the stock is an oversold bargain or a value trap amid margin pressures.
Shares of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL, 300750.SZ) have fallen sharply, dropping 24.04% over the past month to trade near a 52-week low. The stock closed at CNY 297.10 on September 21, just above its yearly low of CNY 295.55, placing the world's largest battery manufacturer at a critical juncture for investors.
Technicals Signal Extreme Pessimism
The recent sell-off has pushed CATL's stock into deeply oversold territory, according to technical indicators. The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI), a measure of momentum, has fallen to 20.0, well below the 30.0 threshold that typically signals an oversold condition.
Despite this, the prevailing trend remains strongly bearish, with technical signals for both daily and weekly charts indicating a "Strong Sell," according to data from Investing.com. Analysts are watching key technical levels, with initial support seen around CNY 294.34 and a significant resistance level near CNY 307.87. A sustained move above this resistance would be the first sign that selling pressure is abating.
Valuation vs. Margin Concerns
Analysts at Citi have noted that the stock's valuation has significantly reset, with a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 16.5x as of June 30, 2026. This suggests that substantial market pessimism may already be priced in. CATL also reported strong historical results, with fiscal 2025 revenue reaching CNY 423.70 billion and net income of CNY 72.20 billion, per Investing.com.
AdHowever, recent performance has raised concerns about profitability. While second-quarter profit beat expectations, it was accompanied by declining gross margins. The EV-battery gross margin fell to 20.6%, and the energy-storage gross margin slipped to 24.0%. These figures have fueled a bear case that points to intense EV price competition, weaker consumer demand, and potential U.S. tariff pressures as significant headwinds that could continue to squeeze margins.
The Path Forward
The outlook for CATL hinges on whether the current challenges are temporary. Bulls point to resilient demand in the energy storage sector, where CATL's market share grew to 29.9% from 26.9% a year earlier. They also argue that falling lithium inventories could help stabilize battery margins in the future.
Conversely, bears believe the market is anticipating a prolonged period of margin compression rather than a short-term dip. For now, the consensus view suggests a cautious approach. While the risk-reward profile has become more attractive after the steep decline, investors are looking for confirmation—such as the stock holding key support levels and evidence of stabilizing margins—before concluding the downtrend is over.
