Canada Goose Stock Slides After Downgrade Cites New 50% US Tariff

Shares of Canada Goose Holdings Inc. (GOOS) declined in pre-market trading Wednesday after an analyst at Williams Trading downgraded the stock, citing a significant new U.S. tariff on Canadian apparel that could jeopardize the company's financial guidance.
Analyst Cites Tariff Threat
Williams Trading lowered its rating on Canada Goose to Sell from Hold and cut its price target to C$10 from C$12. The downgrade was prompted by a new 50% tariff on Canadian apparel signed into law in the U.S. on July 20, 2026, which is scheduled to take effect on August 19, 2026.
The analyst firm warned that the tariff poses a serious threat to Canada Goose's ability to maintain its fiscal 2027 financial outlook. According to the note, the new trade barrier could force the company to reduce or completely withdraw its forward-looking guidance, creating significant uncertainty for investors.
Significant US Market Exposure
The luxury brand is particularly vulnerable to this trade development. A substantial majority of its signature parkas and outerwear are manufactured in Canada, making them subject to the new import duty. The U.S. is a critical market for the company, accounting for approximately 24% of its total revenue.
AdThis high level of exposure makes Canada Goose one of the most directly affected apparel companies by the escalating trade friction. The stock had already hit a new 52-week low on Tuesday, and the downgrade added to the existing bearish pressure on its shares.
Market Reaction
In pre-open trading, Canada Goose stock fell 1.3% to $9.05, just above its 52-week low of $9.14. The decline is a company-specific reaction, as the broader market was largely flat, with the S&P 500 showing minimal change.
Key factors driving the stock's underperformance include:
- Analyst Action: Downgrade to Sell from Hold at Williams Trading.
- Tariff Impact: An imminent 50% U.S. tariff on its core products.
- Guidance Risk: Potential for a downward revision or withdrawal of its FY27 outlook.
