Brazil's Bovespa Index Plummets 15% into Oversold Territory After Election Shock

Brazil's Bovespa stock index plunged on Monday, falling deep into technically oversold territory after a surprise election result rattled investor confidence. The benchmark index dropped sharply as markets repriced political risk and grappled with the country's fiscal outlook.
Political Shock Triggers Sell-Off
The sell-off was triggered by President Lula's unexpected win of a fourth term, an outcome that markets had not priced in, according to a report from Investing.com. Uncertainty was compounded by reports that the incumbent, Bolsonaro, intends to seek an annulment of the result.
By 2:57 PM EDT on October 26, the Bovespa (IBOV) was down 14.76% to 174,808. The U.S.-listed iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ), a popular vehicle for international investors, fell even more sharply, trading down 20.35%. The move was largely isolated to Brazil-linked assets, as U.S. indices traded modestly higher, indicating it was not driven by broader global risk-off sentiment.
Technical Indicators Flash Oversold
The precipitous decline pushed multiple technical indicators into oversold conditions, which suggest the downward move has been rapid and severe but do not in themselves signal an imminent bottom. The report highlighted that sellers are in firm control of the short-term trend.
Key daily readings for the Bovespa index included:
Ad- Relative Strength Index (RSI): At 29.4, falling below the classic oversold threshold of 30.
- Stochastic RSI: A reading of 2.0, indicating a deeply oversold state.
- Average Directional Index (ADX): At 45.8, signaling a strong and well-established downward trend.
Despite the sharp daily downturn, the longer-term weekly chart appears less damaged. The weekly RSI remains in neutral territory at 45.2, and key long-term moving averages have not yet broken, suggesting the primary uptrend remains intact for now.
Market Outlook and Key Levels
Beyond the political shock, investors are also weighing Brazil's underlying fiscal health. The report cited analysis from ING flagging a fiscal deficit of 7–8% and a net debt-to-GDP ratio of approximately 70% as persistent concerns.
A bullish case for a rebound rests on the deeply oversold readings, which often precede a relief rally. However, the bearish view cautions that a sell-off driven by fundamental political and fiscal fears, confirmed by a strong trend, could persist. Traders are now watching key technical levels for the Bovespa, with immediate support at the session low of 169,516 and the 52-week low of 146,174 below that.
