Background

Boeing is close to finalizing a delayed order from Turkish Airlines for 150 of its 737 MAX aircraft after resolving a dispute over engine maintenance that had jeopardized the high-profile deal, according to four people familiar with the matter.

Agreement Back on Track

The agreement is now back on course and could be formally signed as early as next week, three of the sources said. The deal's progression is a significant development for Boeing, as it salvages a major order for its best-selling narrow-body jet.

This order is part of a larger package for 225 jets originally announced a year ago, following a meeting between Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Dispute Over Engine Maintenance

The finalization of the deal was reportedly held up by a disagreement concerning Turkish Airlines' request for a related industrial agreement on engine maintenance. The airline had threatened to walk away from the purchase due to the impasse, according to the sources.

The engines for the 737 MAX are produced by CFM International, a joint venture co-owned by GE Aerospace and France’s Safran. Boeing and CFM declined to comment on the matter, and Turkish Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment, Reuters reported.
