Background

Boeing delivered 51 jets in August, a slight decline from the previous month and down from 57 aircraft in the same period a year earlier, according to company data released Tuesday. The dip was primarily driven by a reduction in handovers of the wide-body 787 Dreamliner.

Delivery and Order Breakdown

The U.S. planemaker handed over just four 787 Dreamliners in August, a significant drop from the nine delivered in August of the prior year. A company spokesperson stated the lower number was not related to any production, supply chain, or certification issues. Boeing still expects to deliver between 90 and 100 of the profitable twin-aisle jets by the end of the year.

Deliveries of the company's best-selling 737 MAX remained robust, with 41 aircraft handed to customers. Key recipients included Southwest Airlines, which took nine jets, and United Airlines, which received eight.

On the sales front, Boeing secured 15 new orders during the month, comprising 13 787s and two 737 MAX aircraft, all for unidentified customers. The company reported no order cancellations in August.

Year-to-Date Performance and Market Context

Through the first eight months of the year, Boeing has delivered a total of 418 aircraft, its highest number for that period since 2018. After accounting for cancellations, the company's net orders for 2026 stand at 453.

Increasing the production and delivery rate of the 787 is considered crucial for Boeing's financial performance. For comparison, European rival Airbus reported it delivered 57 jets and booked 67 new orders in August.
