Bloom Energy Stock Surges on S&P 500 Inclusion and UBS Upgrade

Bloom Energy Corp. (BE) shares surged 5.1% in pre-open trading to reach $265.70 as investors reacted to the company's upcoming inclusion in the S&P 500 index and a subsequent price target upgrade from analysts at UBS.
Index Inclusion Drives Demand
The primary catalyst for the stock's advance is the confirmed announcement that Bloom Energy will join the benchmark S&P 500 Index before the market opens on September 21. This move is significant as it mechanically compels index-tracking mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to purchase the company's shares to accurately reflect the index's composition, creating substantial buying pressure.
Adding to the positive sentiment, Bloom Energy is the first energy company to be admitted to the S&P 500 since 2022, marking a notable milestone for the firm and the clean energy sector.
Analyst Lifts Price Target
Following the index inclusion news, UBS analyst Manav Gupta reiterated a Buy rating on Bloom Energy and raised his price target to $325 from a previous $300. In a note, Gupta cited the S&P 500 membership as a "major long-term catalyst" for the stock.
AdThe analyst's revised target is based on an 11.25x EV/Sales multiple applied to a 2028 revenue estimate of $8.9 billion. Gupta stated that the multiple was increased specifically to account for the valuation premium that index inclusion typically provides, noting that it tends to broaden and stabilize a company's institutional shareholder base.
Outperforming a Cautious Market
Bloom Energy's rally occurred despite a broadly negative tone in the wider market. In pre-market activity, the S&P 500 was down 0.3% amid concerns over elevated oil prices and a roughly 60% market-implied probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike at its next meeting.
The company's strong performance is also supported by a solid fundamental backdrop. In its second quarter of 2026, Bloom reported revenue of $1.07 billion, more than doubling year-over-year and significantly exceeding Wall Street estimates.
