Bitcoin Surges Near $70,000, Triggering Record $1 Billion Short Squeeze

Bitcoin (BTC) surged more than 8% on Wednesday, climbing to a high of $69,970.36 and marking its largest single-day gain since March. The abrupt price reversal triggered a massive short squeeze, leading to the largest liquidation of bearish Bitcoin positions since records began in 2021.
Record Liquidations Fuel Rally
The rally forced the closure of a historic number of bearish derivative positions. According to data from Coinglass, more than $1 billion in Bitcoin short positions were liquidated in just one hour.
This event followed months of declining prices that had fostered significant bearish sentiment. The sharp upward move created a classic short squeeze, where traders betting on a price decline were forced to buy Bitcoin to cover their positions, adding further fuel to the rally.
Catalysts Behind the Reversal
Several factors appeared to contribute to the sudden shift in market momentum, spanning macroeconomic policy, regulatory developments, and technical indicators.
Ad- U.S. Treasury Action: A key catalyst was the U.S. Treasury's unexpected announcement that it would at least double the size of its liquidity support buybacks for 10- to 30-year bonds. This news pushed down long-term Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar, creating a more favorable environment for risk assets like cryptocurrencies.
- Positive Regulatory Signals: Optimism grew after President Trump met with executives from crypto firms like Coinbase and Blockchain.com. Additionally, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) this week proposed a new framework to exempt some digital asset issuers from securities registration, potentially lowering barriers for startups.
- Technical Breakout: Wednesday's gains pushed Bitcoin's price back above its 100-day and 200-day moving averages, important technical levels monitored by traders for signs of a trend reversal.
Broader Market Impact and Outlook
The rally lifted the entire digital asset sector. Ethereum (ETH) climbed as much as 12%, also its best single-day performance since March. Crypto-related stocks surged, with exchange operator Coinbase (COIN) rising over 9% and corporate Bitcoin holder MicroStrategy (MSTR) gaining more than 12%.
According to Axel Rudolph, chief technical analyst at IG, the move was primarily driven by short-covering. He noted that the next significant test for Bitcoin will be whether it can sustain its momentum and challenge the $75,000 resistance area.
While the market has turned bullish, significant regulatory uncertainty remains in the U.S., with comprehensive legislation on digital asset market structure currently stalled in the Senate. The key question for investors is whether this squeeze-driven rally can translate into sustained buying pressure.
