Bitcoin Stalls Near $82,000 as Tech Sell-Off, Oil Surge Dampen Risk Appetite

Bitcoin traded in a tight range on Friday, struggling to find direction as broader market caution, fueled by a sell-off in technology stocks and surging oil prices, suppressed investor appetite for risk assets. The world's largest cryptocurrency was trading up a marginal 0.3% at $81,970 as of 9:49 AM ET, remaining within the $80,000 to $87,000 channel it has occupied for the past month.
Macro Headwinds Pressure Crypto
A widespread sell-off in global technology shares weighed on market sentiment, spilling over into the correlated cryptocurrency sector. The downturn in tech was driven by lackluster earnings from several Wall Street giants and growing concerns over the sustainability of high valuations in the artificial intelligence sector, particularly in a high-interest-rate environment.
Adding to investor anxiety, crude oil prices touched a five-month high on Friday. The surge was linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and reports of potential military action against Iran, which further dampened risk-on sentiment. Investors also remained on the sidelines ahead of key earnings reports from more tech majors and several central bank meetings scheduled for the upcoming week.
ETF Inflows Fail to Ignite Rally
Despite the bearish macroeconomic backdrop, spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded their strongest week of inflows since late September. The funds attracted a total of $442.7 million in net inflows for the week ending October 22, according to data from SoSoValue, ending a two-week streak of net outflows.
AdHowever, this renewed institutional interest has not translated into upward price momentum for Bitcoin. The cryptocurrency's inability to rally on the positive flow data suggests that broader market fears are currently outweighing the supportive ETF demand, keeping its price locked in a sideways consolidation pattern.
Altcoin Market Remains Subdued
The broader altcoin market was similarly muted on Friday, mirroring Bitcoin's flat performance. Key takeaways include:
- Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, was largely unchanged at $2,413.84.
- XRP saw a minor decline of 0.6%.
- Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA) traded sideways with minimal movement.
- BNB was a slight outperformer, gaining 1.9%.
- Meme coins such as Dogecoin (DOGE) and TRUMP posted modest gains of 0.8% and 1.7%, respectively.
