Bitcoin Stalls Near $64,000 as Traders Weigh Softer CPI Against Mideast Tensions

Bitcoin's price held steady on Wednesday, hovering around the $64,000 mark as investors balanced cooler-than-expected U.S. inflation data against persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that have soured risk appetite.
As of 9:51 AM ET, Bitcoin was trading at $63,995.1, down 0.4%, according to Investing.com data. The digital asset remains largely confined to a tight trading range between $60,000 and $65,000, lacking a clear catalyst to break out in either direction.
Inflation Cools, But Fed's Path Remains Unclear
A key focus for markets was the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for July, which showed a slight moderation in price pressures. The data, which is closely watched by the Federal Reserve, came in largely as expected.
Key figures from the report include:
- Headline CPI rose 3.4% year-over-year, down from 3.5% in June.
- Month-over-month, headline CPI increased by 0.1%.
- Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.2% monthly and 2.5% annually.
While moderating inflation can be positive for risk assets like Bitcoin by potentially reducing the need for tighter monetary policy, the report has not settled the debate over the Fed's next move. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders are currently pricing in a 56% probability of the Fed holding rates steady in September, with a 44% chance of a 25-basis-point hike.
AdGeopolitical Tensions Weigh on Risk Appetite
Offsetting the inflation data was a growing risk-off sentiment stemming from the Middle East. Hopes have faded for a swift U.S.-Iran agreement to reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz, a key channel for global oil supply. This uncertainty, coupled with escalating clashes in the Red Sea, pushed oil prices to a near two-week high.
Elevated energy prices can fuel inflationary pressures, potentially forcing central banks to maintain a hawkish stance. This environment of higher interest rates and reduced market liquidity is typically a headwind for speculative assets, including cryptocurrencies.
Broader Crypto Market Stagnant
The cautious mood was reflected across the wider digital asset market, with most major altcoins seeing limited movement. Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, gained 0.7% to trade at $1,903.38, while XRP saw a similar rise. Market sentiment has also been dampened by recent disclosures that MicroStrategy, the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, has been reducing its position.
