Bitcoin Stabilizes Above $77,000, Resuming Upward Trend

Bitcoin stabilized on Sunday, shaking off earlier losses to resume its recent upward trend as investor confidence was bolstered by a weaker U.S. dollar and expectations of looser financial conditions. The leading cryptocurrency's price action provides a tailwind for miners, whose profitability has seen a significant rebound.
As of 11:12 AM ET, Bitcoin was trading up 0.3% at $77,307.0, according to Investing.com data. The move follows a brief consolidation after the asset hit a recent high of $79,461 on Friday, capping a rally driven by falling U.S. Treasury yields, strong spot market demand, and the liquidation of short positions.
Relief for Miners
The price recovery has offered a significant boost to Bitcoin miners. According to a report from Bitcoin.com, the "hashprice"—a key metric measuring the expected daily revenue for a given unit of computing power—surged 20.4% in four days. The metric rose from $31.80 per petahash per second (PH/s) on August 18 to $38.29 by Saturday.
This improvement in profitability comes as the total network hashrate approaches the historic milestone of 1 zettahash per second (ZH/s), currently sitting near 922 exahashes per second (EH/s). Miners earned a total of $682.69 million in August as of Saturday, with the vast majority coming from block rewards rather than transaction fees, underscoring their dependence on a strong Bitcoin price.
Long-Term Outlook and Risks
AdAnalysts point to several factors that could support a long-term bullish case for Bitcoin. Zach Pandl, Head of Research at Grayscale, highlighted three key drivers:
- Growing market adoption: This includes the integration of blockchain technology in financial services and a generational shift in portfolio construction.
- A maturing bear market: The current downturn has lasted approximately 10 months, nearing the average 11- to 12-month duration of previous cycles.
- A supportive macroeconomic backdrop: Pandl linked long-term adoption trends to rising government debt, with U.S. public debt approaching $40.03 trillion as of August 20.
However, interest rate policy remains the most significant risk. While the Federal Reserve held its policy rate steady at 3.5% to 3.75% in July, some officials favored an increase. Further rate hikes would likely put pressure on non-yielding assets like Bitcoin.
Broader Crypto Market
Performance across the broader altcoin market was mixed on Sunday. Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, gained 1% to trade at $2,436.57. Other major tokens saw modest gains, with XRP rising 4.2% to $1.4999, Solana up 2.4%, and BNB climbing nearly 1% to $694.99.
