Background

Bitcoin's price fell slightly on Monday, continuing a period of muted weekend trading as broader market caution weighed on risk assets. The leading cryptocurrency is navigating investor concerns over both escalating geopolitical conflict and the potential for higher interest rates.

By 02:10 ET (06:10 GMT), Bitcoin (BTC) was trading down 0.9% at $64,139.0, as reported by Investing.com. The asset remains within the trading range it has occupied for much of the year, reflecting persistent weak sentiment in the crypto sector.

Geopolitics and Rate Jitters Spook Investors

A key driver of the risk-off mood is the heightened tension between the U.S. and Iran, which saw further strikes over the weekend. The conflict has raised concerns about shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, contributing to a sharp rise in oil prices.

Surging energy costs are fueling worries about renewed inflationary pressures. This could compel the U.S. Federal Reserve to adopt a more hawkish stance on monetary policy. While the central bank is widely expected to hold rates steady at its upcoming July meeting, several Fed officials have recently warned that further rate hikes may be necessary to control sticky inflation. Higher interest rates typically bode poorly for non-yielding assets like Bitcoin.

Broader Crypto Market Declines

The negative sentiment was not confined to Bitcoin, as most major alternative cryptocurrencies also posted losses. The broader market underperformance mirrors Bitcoin's trajectory this year.

Saylor Warns Against Network Upgrade

Separately, Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR) Chair Michael Saylor voiced opposition to a proposed Bitcoin software upgrade known as BIP-110. In a social media post, the prominent Bitcoin proponent argued that a soft fork, which can render some transaction blocks invalid, should only be used to fix severe failures, which he claims the proposal does not address.

Proponents of BIP-110 contend the upgrade is necessary to clear non-monetary data, such as Ordinals, from the blockchain and reduce the burden on node operators. The debate highlights ongoing discussions within the community about the network's primary function and future development.
