Background

Bitcoin's price fell below the $82,000 mark on Tuesday as a combination of surging oil prices, persistent geopolitical tensions, and uncertainty over the Federal Reserve's interest rate path soured risk sentiment across markets.

As of 9:36 AM ET, the leading cryptocurrency was trading at approximately $81,348.2, representing a daily decline of about 0.9%, according to data from Investing.com. The move extends a period of weakness for Bitcoin, which has struggled to mount a sustained recovery after retreating from highs above $85,000 earlier in the month and failing to hold a brief rally past $83,000 in the prior session.

Macro Headwinds Intensify

Broader market anxiety was fueled by a continued rise in energy costs. Brent crude futures, the international oil benchmark, climbed to $111.05 per barrel on Tuesday, a five-month high. The surge follows concerns over potential supply disruptions in the Middle East and recent attacks on infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, which have stoked fears that rising fuel costs will exacerbate global inflationary pressures.

Persistently high oil prices could complicate the Federal Reserve's mission to bring inflation down to its 2% target. This limits the central bank's capacity to ease monetary policy, creating a headwind for risk-sensitive assets like cryptocurrencies that have previously benefited from expectations of looser financial conditions and increased liquidity.

Fed Policy in Focus

Investors are now closely watching for signals from the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy meeting scheduled for October 27-28. Recent U.S. inflation data has reinforced concerns about price pressures, with the September Consumer Price Index rising 3.7% year-over-year and core inflation increasing 2.6%, both slightly above economists' forecasts. A 9.1% monthly jump in gasoline prices was a significant contributor, renewing fears of energy-driven inflation.

While market expectations for an immediate rate hike have diminished, the probability of a hike at the next meeting stands at just 18%, according to FedWatch data. However, the market is pricing in a 75% probability of a rate increase in December, suggesting investors believe the Fed will act to keep inflation in check.

Altcoin Market Moves Sideways

Most other major cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, mirrored Bitcoin's price action, trading within a narrow range on Tuesday.

  • Ethereum (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, was largely unchanged at $2,397.92.
  • XRP also saw minimal movement, trading at $1.3018.
  • Solana and Cardano posted minor gains, while the meme token Dogecoin rose by 0.5%.
