Bitcoin Slips Below $63,000 as U.S.-Iran Tensions and Fed Uncertainty Spook Markets

Bitcoin's price fell more than 2% on Wednesday, dropping to $62,115.3, as a flight to safety gripped financial markets. The decline was driven by a combination of escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the release of Federal Reserve meeting minutes that highlighted significant uncertainty over the future path of U.S. monetary policy.
Geopolitical Headwinds Dampen Risk Appetite
Investor sentiment soured after the U.S. military launched strikes against Iran in retaliation for attacks on commercial oil tankers. Iran responded with its own strikes, leading President Donald Trump to declare at a NATO summit that a recent ceasefire was "over."
The developments triggered a classic risk-off move in markets, with investors shifting away from speculative assets like cryptocurrencies. The tensions also had a direct impact on energy markets, with Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, briefly surging above $80 a barrel for the first time since late June.
Fed Minutes Reveal Deep Divide on Rates
Adding to market anxiety, the minutes from the Federal Reserve's June 16-17 policy meeting showed officials were deeply divided on the outlook for interest rates. While some policymakers argued for an immediate rate hike to combat persistent inflation, the debate revealed high uncertainty.
AdThe minutes noted that most participants saw scenarios where inflation could remain elevated due to factors like strong AI-related demand and the conflict in the Middle East. In such cases, the minutes said, "some policy firming would likely be warranted." A higher interest rate environment typically puts pressure on non-yielding assets like Bitcoin.
Crypto Market Performance and Flows
Bitcoin's slide was mirrored across the broader cryptocurrency market. Other major digital assets also posted losses:
- Ethereum (ETH): Fell 2.1% to $1,735.98
- XRP (XRP): Declined 2.2% to $1.0888
- Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA): Each shed 4.5%
Despite the negative price action, institutional demand showed some resilience. According to data from SoSoValue, U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a third consecutive day of net inflows on Tuesday. These flows have helped cushion the cryptocurrency from deeper losses and reverse a recent trend of significant withdrawals.
