Bitcoin Retreats to $82,000 as Tech Sell-Off, Oil Surge Dampen Risk Appetite

Bitcoin erased a brief overnight rally on Thursday, pulling back toward the $82,000 level as a sell-off in technology stocks and a surge in oil prices soured investor appetite for riskier assets.
As of 2:13 AM ET, the world's largest cryptocurrency traded at $82,785.8, after briefly touching nearly $85,000 in the prior session, according to data from Investing.com. The pullback extends a period of narrow, range-bound trading over the past month and has largely erased gains made during the third quarter.
Macro Headwinds Intensify
Investor sentiment was hit by a sharp downturn in global technology stocks, which followed lackluster earnings reports from several Wall Street giants. The sell-off reflects growing concerns over the impact of prolonged high interest rates and questions about the long-term sustainability of the artificial intelligence boom. Cryptocurrencies, which have historically shown a high correlation with the tech sector, are particularly sensitive to rising borrowing costs.
Compounding the negative mood, oil prices climbed to a five-month high this week amid reports of escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The surge in crude adds to fears of persistent inflation, which could pressure central banks to maintain a hawkish monetary policy stance.
AdAltcoins Follow Broader Market Trend
Other major digital assets also retreated on Thursday, giving back their overnight gains. The broader weakness indicates that the negative macroeconomic factors are affecting the entire crypto ecosystem.
- Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, fell 0.3% to $2,432.48.
- Other major altcoins saw steeper losses, with Solana (SOL) down 1.3% and Cardano (ADA) slipping 2.5%.
- BNB also declined by 0.7%, while meme coins such as Dogecoin (DOGE) dropped 2.3%.
In a slight exception to the trend, XRP posted a modest gain of 0.6%, according to the report.
