Background

Bitcoin's price retreated below the $78,000 mark on Saturday, pulling back from a recent three-month high and putting a spotlight on the cryptocurrency's evolving relationship with traditional safe-haven assets. The move comes amid data suggesting a growing divergence from technology stocks.

As of 05:18 ET, Bitcoin was trading at $77,647.0, a decline of approximately 2.07% over the session, according to Investing.com data. The dip followed a rally earlier in the week that saw the digital asset briefly surpass $81,000.

Shifting Market Correlations

The price action is testing the renewed "digital gold" narrative, which posits that Bitcoin is behaving more like a store of value than a high-risk tech asset. This shift is supported by recent correlation data from Grayscale, which shows a significant change in how Bitcoin trades against other major asset classes.

Key correlation metrics for 2026 include:

  • Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with gold has climbed to over 50%, up from near zero at the start of the year.
  • Its 90-day correlation with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 has fallen to roughly 33%, down from over 60% previously.

This trend coincides with renewed investor concerns over U.S. fiscal policy, particularly after the national debt exceeded $40 trillion. Such macroeconomic pressures have bolstered the so-called "debasement trade," which typically favors scarce assets like gold and, increasingly, Bitcoin.

On-Chain Data and Long-Term Outlook

Despite the price dip, on-chain activity suggests long-term holders remain largely unfazed. Data from Galaxy Research, cited by CoinDesk, showed that of 553.59 BTC moved from long-dormant wallets between Aug. 16 and Aug. 26, only a small fraction was sent to a known exchange address, indicating minimal selling pressure from these older cohorts.

The broader cryptocurrency market also saw declines on Saturday, with major altcoins including Ether, XRP, and Solana registering losses. The current pullback leaves investors weighing Bitcoin's strengthening store-of-value characteristics against its inherent price volatility and emerging long-term technological risks, such as the development of quantum computing.
