Bitcoin Nears $79,000 as Strategy Inc. Resumes Purchases Amid Rate Concerns

Bitcoin rose toward the $79,000 mark in early trading Tuesday, supported by news that major corporate buyer Strategy Inc. has resumed its accumulation of the cryptocurrency. However, the broader market rally was constrained by persistent macroeconomic headwinds, including uncertainty over U.S. interest rates and rising geopolitical risk.
By 02:13 ET (06:13 GMT), Bitcoin was trading up 1.2% at $79,015.3, according to Investing.com data. The move follows a strong performance in August, where the leading cryptocurrency gained nearly 25%.
Strategy Resumes Bitcoin Accumulation
Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR), the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, disclosed on Monday that it had purchased an additional 4,603 coins for approximately $368.7 million last week. This marks the company's first acquisition of the digital asset since late June.
The purchase was funded through a recent sale of $602.8 million in common stock, the company stated. The latest addition brings Strategy's total holdings to 845,050 Bitcoin.
Macroeconomic Headwinds Cap Gains
AdDespite the positive catalyst from Strategy, investor sentiment remains cautious. Hawkish commentary from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has increased market expectations for a September interest rate hike as the central bank reaffirms its commitment to a 2% annual inflation target. Higher interest rates typically reduce the appeal of speculative, non-yielding assets like Bitcoin.
Adding to market jitters, renewed military strikes between the U.S. and Iran have pushed oil prices higher, fueling further concerns about inflation and the potential for a more aggressive monetary policy response from the Fed.
Broader Crypto Market Rises
Most major cryptocurrencies posted gains on Tuesday, continuing the positive momentum from August. Key altcoin movements included:
- Ether (ETH): Rose 1.5% to $2,476.01
- XRP: Increased by 1.8%
- Cardano (ADA): Gained 3.0%
- Solana (SOL): Added 1.2%
