Bitcoin Holds Near $66,000 as Traders Watch US Crypto Bill and Iran Tensions

Bitcoin held steady near a five-week high on Wednesday, as its recent recovery rally paused while investors assessed progress on U.S. crypto legislation and the impact of mounting geopolitical risks in the Middle East.
Price Action Stalls
The world's largest cryptocurrency traded at approximately $65,857, down a marginal 0.1%, according to Investing.com data. The price consolidation follows a sharp rebound from annual lows in recent weeks, a move largely attributed to renewed capital inflows into U.S.-based spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
The cautious sentiment was reflected across the broader digital asset market. Other major cryptocurrencies also stalled after recent gains:
- Ether (ETH): Fell 0.9% to $1,917.05
- XRP: Slipped 0.2% to $1.1321
- Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA): Declined 1.8% and 3.1%, respectively.
Senate Debates Key Crypto Bill
AdMarket focus is turning to Washington, where lawmakers are debating the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. According to a report from CoinDesk, a central obstacle to advancing the bill is an ethics provision that would bar senior government officials from holding significant crypto interests.
The disagreement reportedly centers on enforcement. Senate Democrats are said to favor granting enforcement power to state attorneys general, while the White House and the bill's Republican sponsors prefer that authority rest with the U.S. attorney general. Lawmakers are working to resolve the issue before the Senate's August 7 summer recess.
Geopolitical Headwinds
Adding to market uncertainty are persistent U.S.-Iran tensions, which have created macroeconomic headwinds. The conflict has contributed to a surge in global oil prices, fueling concerns about sticky, energy-driven inflation.
This raises the possibility that the Federal Reserve could be compelled to raise interest rates later this year to contain price pressures. Higher interest rate environments typically reduce investor appetite for speculative, non-yielding assets such as cryptocurrencies.
