Background

Bitcoin held steady on Thursday, trading near $64,800 after a modest recovery earlier in the week. The cryptocurrency is caught between conflicting macroeconomic signals as investors weigh cooling U.S. inflation against renewed geopolitical risks and their potential impact on energy prices.

As of 01:21 ET (05:21 GMT), Bitcoin (BTC/USD) was down a slight 0.2% to $64,830.4, according to Investing.com data. The leading digital asset remains up approximately 1.6% for the week, recovering from its lowest levels of the year.

Markets Parse Conflicting Signals

Recent support for Bitcoin came from soft U.S. consumer and producer inflation reports for June, which have tempered market expectations for an imminent interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve. A less aggressive monetary policy outlook is typically favorable for non-yielding, speculative assets like cryptocurrencies.

However, this optimism is being counteracted by escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran. The conflict has disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, pushing crude prices higher and souring broader risk appetite. Investors remain cautious that a surge in energy costs could reignite inflationary pressures, potentially forcing the Fed to reconsider rate hikes later in the year.

In corporate news, Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR) CEO Phong Le reaffirmed the company's long-term Bitcoin acquisition strategy. In a Bloomberg TV interview on Tuesday, Le stated that significant risks to the company's debt-funded treasury model would only emerge if Bitcoin's price were to fall to the $8,000 to $10,000 range.

Le's comments aim to reassure investors after the firm—the world's largest corporate Bitcoin holder—recently sold over $215 million worth of its holdings and went nearly a month without announcing new purchases. Any sustained selling from a holder of Strategy's scale is closely watched as a potential risk to the market.

Altcoin Market Sees Muted Gains

Broader cryptocurrency markets saw marginal gains, though a lack of strong positive catalysts kept trading subdued.

  • Ether (ETH/USD), the second-largest cryptocurrency, rose 2.3% to $1,926.19.
  • XRP added 0.9%.
  • Solana (SOL) was an outlier, falling 1.2%.
