Bitcoin Holds Near $64,000 as Investors Weigh Fed Policy and Geopolitical Risks

Bitcoin remained steady near the $64,000 mark on Friday, showing little reaction to a broad rally in technology stocks as investors grappled with an uncertain monetary policy outlook and persistent geopolitical risks. The leading cryptocurrency was trading at approximately $64,352, up 0.5%, and is on track for a nearly 10% monthly gain in July, following a decline of more than 20% in the prior month, according to Investing.com data.
Macro Headwinds Limit Upside
Crypto assets diverged from traditional risk-on sentiment that propelled U.S. stocks, where the Nasdaq Composite jumped nearly 3% overnight. The rally in equities was fueled by strong earnings from Microsoft, which renewed optimism in artificial intelligence, but Bitcoin failed to participate in the move.
Market participants are weighing two key headwinds. The U.S. Federal Reserve held interest rates steady this week but offered few clear signals on the timing of future policy easing. Concurrently, escalating U.S.-Iran hostilities are supporting elevated oil prices, which could sustain inflationary pressures and limit the Fed's ability to cut rates.
Mixed Signals from Corporate Results
AdRecent quarterly earnings from major crypto-related firms presented a mixed picture of the industry's health. Institutional sentiment also appears cautious, with Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experiencing volatile flows after a sustained period of inflows.
- MicroStrategy (MSTR): The largest corporate holder of Bitcoin reported a second-quarter loss of $8.22 billion. The loss was primarily due to mark-to-market accounting rules on its digital asset holdings, as the company increased its Bitcoin position by about 11% during the quarter.
- Coinbase Global (COIN): The U.S. crypto exchange posted a wider-than-expected quarterly loss and weaker revenue. The results were impacted by subdued trading volumes, which weighed on the company's transaction-based income.
Altcoin Market Remains Subdued
Most alternative cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, also traded in tight ranges. Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, edged up 0.3% to $1,906.92. Other major tokens, including XRP and Solana, saw modest gains, while Cardano rose 3.6%.
