Bitcoin Holds Below $78,000 as Investors Await Key U.S. Regulatory Vote

Bitcoin moved in a tight range on Thursday, holding steady below recent peaks as investors weighed impending regulatory milestones in the United States against broader market caution stemming from geopolitical tensions and the prospect of higher interest rates.
As of 02:01 ET (06:01 GMT), Bitcoin was trading at $77,759.4, a modest increase of 0.2%, but remained well below its late-August high of $82,000. The market's cautious tone was influenced by expectations of interest rate hikes from major central banks and ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran, according to a report from Investing.com.
Regulatory Developments in Focus
Market attention is squarely on the progress of cryptocurrency regulation in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair PAul Atkins stated earlier this week that he anticipates the Senate will hold a crucial procedural vote on the Clarity Act on September 15.
In a Fox Business interview, Atkins expressed confidence that the bill, which aims to create a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets, could reach the president's desk this month. He also noted that the SEC is concurrently developing its own framework, the Regulation Crypto Assets proposal, which could proceed even if the Clarity Act fails to pass Congress.
"The Regulation Crypto Assets proposal is our most historic step yet to cement America as the Crypto Capital of the World– and is consonant with our belief that Congress should send the CLARITY Act to the President’s desk,” Atkins said. The legislative process has reportedly been delayed by disagreements over the treatment of stablecoin yield payments and rules on crypto trading by policymakers.
AdBroader Market and Altcoin Performance
Geopolitical and macroeconomic factors are contributing to a risk-off sentiment in speculative assets. Reports of fresh strikes by Iran against U.S. bases in Kuwait have kept investors on edge. Meanwhile, hawkish commentary from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh and Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda has solidified market bets on interest rate hikes from both central banks in September.
In the broader cryptocurrency market, performance was mixed:
- Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, declined by 0.7% to $2,404.84.
- XRP rose by 1.6%.
- Cardano (ADA) was a notable outperformer, jumping 4%.
- Solana (SOL) and BNB posted modest gains of 0.8% and 1.2%, respectively.
