Bitcoin Holds Above $78,000 as 'Currency Debasement' Fears Weaken Dollar

Bitcoin held steady above the $78,000 level on Tuesday, pausing after a rally to a three-month high, as concerns over U.S. fiscal health continued to pressure the dollar and drive capital into alternative assets.
As of 9:29 AM ET, the world's largest cryptocurrency was trading at $78,644.8, up a marginal 0.1%, according to data from Investing.com. The token had earlier touched an intraday high of $81,300.0, its highest level in over three months. Tuesday's stability follows a significant run-up, with Bitcoin recording gains in eight of the past nine trading sessions.
Dollar Weakness Fuels Crypto Inflows
The primary catalyst for the recent crypto strength is growing market anxiety about the long-term outlook for the U.S. dollar, stemming from a U.S. Treasury Department announcement last week. The Treasury said it plans to nearly double the pace of its bond buybacks to suppress rising government bond yields, a move that has sparked what some analysts are calling a 'currency debasement trade.'
This has prompted investors to move into assets like gold and cryptocurrencies, which are often viewed as hedges against currency devaluation. In a research note, analysts at OCBC Bank said the Treasury's announcement "has shifted the market narrative from 'higher yields' to 'dollar debasement,'" adding that "rising policy uncertainty and questions about Fed independence are continuing to weigh on the dollar."
Rally Triggers Massive Short Squeeze
AdThe sharp price increase was amplified by a significant short squeeze, forcing traders betting against Bitcoin to close their positions at a loss. Data from Coinglass showed that over $457 million in Bitcoin short positions were liquidated in the past 24 hours.
This trend extended across the crypto market, with Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, seeing $112.3 million in short liquidations over the same period, according to Coinglass. The liquidations continue a pattern from the previous week when Bitcoin's sudden rebound cleared out billions in bearish bets.
Altcoin Market Sees Mixed Performance
The broader cryptocurrency market saw a minor pullback on Tuesday after the recent period of strong gains. Major alternative coins, or altcoins, displayed mixed performance:
- Ethereum (ETH) fell 1.2% to $2,463.0.
- Solana (SOL) rose 2.3%.
- XRP and Cardano (ADA) declined by 2.6% and approximately 3%, respectively.
- BNB was largely unchanged.
